{The “irony” of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 attack (on Bernie Sanders senate vote) lies is the fact that her husband, (3^rd Way Blue-Dog DINO POTUS Bill Clinton), crossed-the-aisle, in 2000, to sign a Republican/T “financial deregulation bill” into law.  And it created the 2008-09 financial crisis which necessitated a bailout.

In 2008, Bernie Sanders voted against the (pure) “bank bailout” (of speculating big private internationally-owned Federal Reserve backed banks).  POTUS George W. Bush then “changed” the T.A.R.P. bailout to “include loans” to the devastated U.S. auto industry.  And in 2009, Sanders “voted for” that version.

(Bank Backstory)  Fed-backed banks had invested hundreds of millions in lobbying efforts and campaign contributions to get themselves deregulated.  The crash and weak economy destabilized community banks were swallowed up by Fed-banks.  Big Fed-banks won.  (And they’re bigger).

(Auto Backstory)  In 2008, the profit-charter focused U.S. auto industry had been promoting and building more “high profit margin” gas guzzling large vehicles.  The Financial Modernization Act of 2000, (which was signed or approved by POTUS Bill Clinton, almost every congressional Republican/T and Corporate 3^rd Way Dem Blue-Dog DINO), had opened up “speculation in commodities,” including oil, to “non-end-users” …non-oil refiners or any hedge fund and (year 2000) deregulated big-bank on Wall Street.

Subsequently, speculators borrowed money in the Wall Street casino and put it on oil.  And that “escape from market reality” doubled the price of oil in a several months (2007-2008) to historic highs, at just past $140 per barrel.  (Oil producers like Saudi Arabia held “country exclusive” Sovereign Funds that made dollars by “selling and speculating.”)  The price of gas and diesel doubled, and many Americans no longer wanted heavy (high profit margin) vehicles built from the assembly lines of GM and Chrysler.  The auto corporations required time and loans to design new fuel efficient cars and convert existing assembly lines.  (Ford struggled along for several quarters without government loans).  As a result of the T.A.R.P. loans, the U.S. auto industry (which accounts for 17% of the U.S. economy and a few million jobs) was not replaced by foreign import competition.  That would have made the U.S.A. a third world country overnight.  And the country would have descended into a long lasting economic depression.  The Bush T.A.R.P. bailout was passed with primarily congressional Democratic votes (including 3^rd Way Wall Street DINO Blue-Dogs).

Speculation by Wall Street non-end users did artificially increase the price of basic commodities like food, fuel, and metals.  That practice makes profits for hedge funds and the filthy rich, while hurting poor nations and individuals (worldwide) who can least afford a price hikes.

POTUS Bill Clinton, other 3^rd Way Dem Blue-Dogs DINO’s and congressional corporate Republican/Ts took away a number of “key market protections” by trashing (depression era legislation) Glass-Steagall 1933 in favor of The Financial Modernization Act of 2000.
